Overview
Roblox Studio is the free editor used to build experiences. You do not need to buy plugins or paid assets to learn the basics — a Baseplate template and the built-in panels are enough for your first week.
This guide walks through a clean install path, the windows you will use every day, and safe habits so you do not lose work. It is educational Studio help only — not a piracy, exploit, or “free Robux” path. Shop tools on Mystery Market are separate from Studio publishing.

Steps
- 1
Install Studio from the official Roblox site
Sign into roblox.com with the account you want as the place owner. Open Create → open Studio (or download Studio from the Create flow). Run the installer, then launch Studio and confirm you are signed in under the correct username before you create anything important.
- 2
Start from Baseplate (or a template)
Choose New → Baseplate for a blank ground plane, or pick a template if you want spawn points and lighting presets already placed. Avoid downloading random “Studio packs” from Discord — stick to official templates until you understand Explorer and Properties.
- 3
Learn the three panels you will live in
Viewport is the 3D world. Explorer lists every Instance (Workspace, Lighting, StarterGui, ServerScriptService). Properties shows settings for the selected object. If a panel is missing, restore it from the View tab rather than reinstalling Studio.
- 4
Save locally and publish a draft
Use File → Save to Roblox (or Save As) so the place lives on your account. Give it a clear name like “Learning Baseplate”. You can keep the experience private while you experiment — publishing privately is different from making it public on the Discover page.
Tips
- Turn on File → Auto-Recovery so crashes lose less work.
- Rename Parts in Explorer (Floor, SpawnPad) so scripts stay readable later.
- Use Orthographic / top views when aligning floors; Perspective when checking player feel.
- Never paste unknown Plugin Market scripts that ask for HttpService secrets on day one.
FAQ
- Is Roblox Studio free?
- Yes. Studio is free to download and use. Some Marketplace assets and plugins cost Robux, but beginner learning does not require them.
- Do I need a powerful PC?
- A modest laptop works for Baseplate learning. Large open-world maps and dense meshes need more RAM and a stronger GPU later.
- Can I use Studio on a phone?
- No. Studio is desktop software (Windows/macOS). Play and test on mobile after you publish, but build on a computer.
